How does spaced repetition help you remember for exams?

A complete guide to spaced repetition, the research-backed method for remembering information over time, with practical tips and tools.

Learning methods8 min

Spaced repetition is science's answer to how we remember best. It is the basis of how plue's flashcards work, and it can change the way you study.

What is spaced repetition?

Spaced repetition means reviewing information at increasing intervals. Instead of studying the same thing 10 times in one evening, known as massed practice, you spread out the reviews: day 1, day 3, day 7, day 14, day 30. Each review strengthens the memory, and the increasing intervals make the most of the effect.

The science behind it

Spaced repetition is based on two research principles:

  • The forgetting curve: Psychologist Hermann Ebbinghaus showed that we forget information exponentially quickly unless we review it. Each review helps us remember for longer.
  • The testing effect: Actively retrieving information from memory, known as active recall, strengthens memory traces more than passive review.

How to use spaced repetition in practice

With flashcards (the best method)

Flashcards and spaced repetition make the strongest combination. In plue, this happens automatically: cards you do not know appear more often, while cards you have mastered appear less often. You do not need to manage the schedule yourself; the app handles it.

Without an app (manually)

If you prefer to do it manually, make physical flashcards and sort them into boxes. Box 1 is for daily review, box 2 for every other day, box 3 for weekly review, and so on. Cards you answer correctly move up; incorrect answers move down.

Common mistakes

  • Starting too late: Spaced repetition needs time. Start at least one or two weeks before the exam.
  • Skipping days: Consistency is key. Fifteen minutes every day beats two hours once a week.
  • Only reading the card: You need to try to remember the answer before you turn the card over. Actively searching your memory is what strengthens learning.

Results you can expect

Research shows that spaced repetition can improve long-term memory by up to 200% compared with traditional studying. Students who use the method report spending less time studying while remembering more.
