Is 27 too old for university? No. Here is what to consider

No, 27 is not too late for university. How to think about age differences, student life, money, study routines and Sweden’s CSN age limits.

Twenty-seven might feel late if you compare yourself with someone who started straight after secondary school. At university, it is a perfectly normal age to retrain, change direction or start when life actually allows it.

One of the month's most-discussed student questions in Sweden was whether 27 is already too old for university. Read the Reddit discussion from August 2026.

You will not be the only person over 20

The Swedish Council for Higher Education's statistics for autumn 2026 include applicants aged 25–34 and in older age groups. Programmes and courses vary, but university is not one single year group that moved straight from secondary school.

On some programmes, the age difference is more noticeable at first. After a few weeks, the more important question is usually who turns up, does their share of the group work and is good company at lunch.

What you bring can be an advantage

  • You often have a clearer idea of why you chose the programme.
  • You have experience of work, responsibility or managing your own time.
  • You can more easily see what you want to get out of the course.
  • You do not need to build your entire identity around student life.

That does not mean studying will automatically be easy. But motivation rooted in your own decision often lasts longer than “this was just the next step”.

Student life without pretending to be 19

Choose the parts you actually like. Attend an orientation session, join someone for lunch, try a society or organise a study group. You can be social without going to every party. Our guide to making friends at university has a low-pressure plan for the first month.

Make an honest financial plan

Account for housing, travel, food, course costs, lost income and the length of the programme. Then check student funding against your own history and age. According to CSN's age limits for 2026, student grants can be awarded through the year you turn 60, while access to student loans begins to decrease from the year you turn 51.

So for a 27-year-old, the age limit is not the issue. What may matter is how many funded weeks you have already used, your study load and your overall budget.

Prepare for the studying itself

If it has been a long time since you sat in a classroom, start simply. Read the syllabus, schedule two regular study sessions a week and test yourself instead of only reading. Ask for help early with academic writing, maths or study methods if you need it.

You do not have to prove that you can still study by doing everything alone.

Four better questions than “am I too old?”

  1. Do I want this education or the opportunities it leads to?
  2. What will my finances look like throughout the programme?
  3. What support do I need to get back into studying?
  4. What happens if I wait another three years?

If the programme still feels right after those questions, being 27 is not a reason to give it up. The years will pass either way. The question is what you want to know when they have.
